Acrylic on canvas, mixed media, 8” x 8” x 1.5”

I wasn’t sure that the free paint process of mark making could be done on small pieces but this and the other smalls in my collection have proven me wrong. This is just a nice small piece with some big interest that could stand on a shelf with books as much as hang on the wall. I could see this as a part of a display area, something that adds a pop of color and movement. The way that this painting free process works creates so much movement in the composition that makes it playful.

This is a smaller piece that I did at the same time as a larger piece with the same color scheme. Someone once told me every piece needs a little black. I never used to use Black in my paintings, not sure why but I guess I felt it was too heavy. Now that I have started to apprecaiate the color I can indeed see where it can highlight and create interest or lead the eye. Its also nice when a bit of black peaks out from under another color and you get the hint of it. Small pieces can be a challenge for Artists because you have to figure out how to fit all the design elements of a successful piece on a small canvas. I have been doing a few 6 x 6 and 8 x 8 pieces because they can look very nice in groups of small pieces and not everyone has large walls! The smalls have been showing me that I can create a piece that has all the balance and other features that make a successful piece on a small canvas this has been a fun project.
